But some extra validation of those is probably a sensible idea. Doesn't happen with megatrain, but they are low volume low value (at the moment, anyway).

It's a standard feature of RSP standard compliant self print and mobile phone tickets.

More specifically, it's the last four digits of the chosen form of ID, plus a three letter code to indicate what sort of ID it is.

There aren't that many spare digits in a Megatrain confirmation number. In addition to a plain-to-see identification of the date and train the ticket is for (and a serial number for that train, I have ticket no 5 here), there's just four more digits, which don't bear any resemblance to my credit card number.

Valid ID in the specification is defined as Credit Card, Debit Card, Passport, Driving Licence, Armed Forces Card, National Insurance Card or NHS Medical Card.
