Strange they don’t know how many you sort of think they might keep
tabs on that, perhaps it’s quantative easing.

Presumably they have both correct and incorrect dies from which the
coins have been struck with it not being a necessary part of the
procedure to know how many coins are struck by individual dies.

I got the impression that they'd used the old head with the new tail
(the tail used to have the year, so the old head didn't need it).

I don't know why the old head would still be available though.
