I think most of the character disappeared with the ridiculous 80s
refurb, especially losing the Trinity Street building. Moving the
stairways to the other side of the street may be good for connections
to the bus station but not when you want to get from platform 1 to
platform 4.
The platform repairs to the roof supports were also botched beyond
belief. 1 & 3 still have a fair number of the original (cast iron?)
bases, but most of those on 4 were replaced with concrete lumps that
just look ridiculous. Same goes for the patterned woodwork on the
roof overhangs. Last year's painting has helped a little and at least
they didn't flatten the L&Y platform buildings or remove all of the
etched glass.
