Re: Oh the grand old trains from York ,stuffed with passengers then, run right up to the top through the hills and run right down again

Manchester-Glasgow/Edinburgh going to TPX was a complete nonsense,
IMO, because (as you say) it's nothing like their normal operation and
the 3-car commuter-layout DMUs are completely unsuitable for it.

(Then again, they are completely unsuitable for what they do now. Not
even remotely enough seating capacity, and a nonsensical layout. That
said, that's nothing a re-seat to be more similar in layout to the
WCML ones won't improve at least slightly).

The layout of the 185s is superb. I think they are perfectly suitable. Good legroom, plenty of facing sets with tables, plenty of luggage space. What more do you want?

If the units doing Liverpool to Norwich had as many seats per coach as the Class 185, would more or less pax be able to get a seat?

Partly the reduction in seating capacity has to do with changes in the rules since the 158s were built, and the door layout, but there are still less seats. Also the 185 is appallingly noisy and shaky when the driver takes power. And they ride like pigs.

Try getting on board a southbound 185 at Preston any weekday afternoon. Then say how superb they are.
