Was this week pottering around Neyland, Brunel's deep water port in SW
Wales.
The town has lost some of its grim facade by the construction of a
marina and there are historical
panels charting and explaining its construction and regular use.
However, none of these panels explained why Neyland lost its importance
and a new port was constructed
at Goodwick ( Fishguard Harbour ).
Can anyone shed light on why Goodwick was chosen in preference to
Neyland as to my untutored eye it
appeared that Neyland had everything a deep water port needed ?
Dam' sight nearer to Ireland (trains generally being faster than ships,
the North Pembroke line excepted..) and around the right side of St.
David's Head, thus sparing the passengers on the cross-channel ships
a notably nasty bit of water.
Besides, the GW had always /meant/ to go to the north coast of Penfro:
