As with your choice of daily newspaper, it's a matter of personal

So you don't actually know one with higher standards at
a low price then.

It's a matter of personal preference. There are probably several
candidates. I'm happy with the magazines I buy, but Modern Railways is
no longer among them, and I don't even bother reading it on the shelf at
WHSmith any more. When you cannot tell the difference between
advertising and editorial, there is really no point.

But the decline in Modern Railways has a parallel in the decline of what
was formerly an excellent magazine, "Railway World". That title was
allowed to wither on the vine, becoming a rag with increasingly tired
journalism. It gradually got worse over a period of several years until
it wasn't worth the paper it was printed on, let alone the cover price.

Trouble finding a decent editor I think. Didn't they
give the job to a bloke from Virgin Trains at one point?

I don't think Virgin Trains existed then.

The publisher was Ian Allan, the same as for Modern Railways.

MR is a Franchise operation I believe. a MOC, perhaps?

A franchise? How does that work? Or doesn't work ...
