Austria has gone down that route with the Railjet push-pull rakes. -
They work in multiple too

In Switzerland the lok(s) could be at the front, in the middle or at
the rear. There could even be vans at one end, for rapid release
somewhere en route. It's very impressive to see 9-car double deck ICs
strengthened with 3 standard cars at peak times too.

Those who believe loco haulage is inflexible really should look around!
