Because they have red ends instead?
Which is EXACTLY my point :o)
If (as was posted above) red is as every bit as good as yellow,
then
to restrict it to yellow is no more than a *livery* standard not a
*safety* standard. If it were safety and red is as good as yellow
there is no reason why main line train cant have red.
According to various tests carried out IIRC in the early 1960s,
yellow
is
more visible than red from a distance. The original trial were
proposing
to
paint fire engines yellow rather tha red. However it was thought
that
the
increase in visibilty would be countered by the unfamiliarity so the
engines
stayed red.
Wasn't it done on behalf of Coventry Fire Brigade or at an
establishment
in
Coventry hence the naming of the colour "Coventry Yellow"? It was
adopted
by the GPO (BT?) for some time until they changed to grey (which must
be
the daftest colour ever for vehicles parked at the roadside)
ISTR the reply to complaints from staff was that the yellow (=Vauxhall
Cargo Yellow on PO/BT vehicles) was actually close to useless at night
when the accident risk was worst.
and by most
highway authorities. Coventry Yellow fire engines were used for a time
but
they were was a lot of resistance to the use of the colour, Grampian
still
use white fire engines for similar reasons.- Hide quoted text -

epsecially versus the large reflective 'piper' that appeared o nthe
sides on the grey ones
If it was the large reflective "piper" (I have heard it called other
things!) that made the grey vans visible in the dark when why not
something
large and reflective on a background of a colour like yellow which would
be
more visible in daylight as well?
devices external to the vehicle are almost certainly more appropriate,
as described in the driver's copy of the "Roadworks Guarding Manual"
(no doubt now renamed at great expense on the advice of a
"consultant").
A lot can happen in the time taken in getting out the appropriate warning
devices, far better to have the vehicle itself as visible as possible.
Also most forms of appropriate warning devices can either blow over
or getISTR that has included the van at least once.
stolen whilst the BT people are down their hole or working in the back of
the van.
Also any person putting out these appropriate warning devices.
will need to have been on the appropriate course and have a piece of paper
to prove it.
