Now who could that have been?  ;-)

Christ, this is tedious. The bus has some pull, helped along by
chronic congestion on the A34, but not to the same extent as rail-
based PT. What's difficult to understand about that?

OK, in simple words: *more* people (read: Middle Englanders) will
leave the car at home if there is a rail-based PT alternative. The
only exception to this rule is where coaches offer a higher quality
product overall, with keen pricing, as we have discussed regarding the
Oxford-London corridor.

When it suits you, there's no demand for the bus.  When it suits you,
there is so much demand for the bus that its frequency was doubled.

No, it's a question of order of magnitude. I suspect, and am willing
to be corrected, that X5 demand is largely from demographic groups
with a low value of time. I assume you understand that term, and that
there may be significant demand within that category of traveller.
Rail can, and does, achieve greater modal shift, in terms of absolute
numbers and being attractive to a wider demographic.

Do make up your mind, because self-contradiction is never a good basis
for sensible discussion.

I'm sorry, I'm baling here because I don't have time to teach a mixed-
ability group today. Tim, how does this killfile thing work?
