Environmentalists generally [1] didn't want the thing built at all.
That is true whether it was the landscape lobby, who call themselves
environmentalists but it is debatable whether they are, or
environmentalists. It is fair to say that, if it was to be built, it
was the landscape lobby which, with some exceptions, wanted
passengers imprisoned at the top.
[1] I say generally because there may have been some who did.

Same sort of madness is going on with Llanbedr airfield north of Barmouth,
Almost all the locals want it reopened, friends of Snowdonia what it to stay
closed.
The friends of Snowdonia probably missing the fact that if it reopens to
civil traffic it will force the RAF fast jets away from the area ( They are
probably never there mid week and the RAF don't work weekends,lol)
