Arguably working on a laptop is not a quiet activity, at least not if
it involves typing. Depends how quiet the laptop's keyboard is of
course. I'd be interested to hear what other people's thoughts are on
this - it wouldn't fuss me, but I can imagine that the tappety tap of
typing on a laptop might irk some who head to the quiet coach for a
bit of P&Q. (I dare say responses might be informed by whether the
respondee works on their laptop when on a train or not!)
True, but trains are hardly at library levels of background noise. When
you're sitting on a pair of traction motors, or thundering down the ECML at
125mph, I don't think keyboard tapping is going to be a problem.
Anyway people will still be able to work on their laptop and indeed on
their Blackberry or similar device when on such a carriage, they just
won't have a network connection - see the great many people who are
reading or composing messages on their Blackberry (or indeed their
mobile) whilst on the Tube.
Agreed but, for example, the commute into work is the time when many people
check their emails. While they can do it offline they may want to look at
other material on the net, and offline the emails will have to wait until
they get to work to be sent (mainline station platforms not being the
easiest place to whip out a laptop and phone to click 'Send').
Also, dare I suggest that Blackberry users are rather more likely to
recieve calls (or, prompted by incoming messages, wish to make calls),
hence arguably they might be more at home in a non-quiet carriage.
That depends. This is really a technological fix for a social problem.
