Yes, they did. I remember reading about it at the time and thinking
how silly it was. Not nearly as silly as the railway, of course.
But that won't stop me trying to get a ride on it before it closes, as
I have a particular weakness for funicular railways. Childhood
holidays in Scarborough are probably at the root of it ...
