Re: Most forgetful Chiltern driver!

I've also had one routing error, when an HST that I was travelling on
from Padd to Reading was routed into a through road at Reading. After
standing there for a while we then ran forward a couple of train
lengths, and back into the correct platform. My connection was about 12
minutes, and I missed it because of that.

Can't really blame the driver, though. He was already slowing down for
the stop, and an emergency stop on realising that the wrong route was
set might have upended people who had already risen from their seats to
get off.

Presumably routed from the Down Main on to the reversible through Up Main.
If that is correct, it shouldn't have needed an emergency stop - the signal
diverting the train from the Down Main is, IIRC, approach controlled from
red. When it cleared it would have shown the wrong feather or theatre
indicator, and if the driver had been completely on the ball he'd have
refused it and stopped at the junction signal. However, an easy error to
make, as he must have taken it as a signal into the Up No. 5 Platform (also
reversible).

I once observed the Golden Arrow given the wrong route at Bickley Junction.
It was towards the end of its operation, may even have been the last day. In
this case the signal for the Tonbridge Spur was not approach controlled, as
the Down Main is limited to 60 mph, and the spur was limited to 50 mph, so
the first indication the driver would have had was the lack of the feather
at the junction signal. He stopped at the next signal and phoned the box -
after some discussion he got going again, presumably taking the route via
Bat & Ball or Maidstone, so all that resulted was a somewhat late arrival at
Dover.
