I didn't do that route, but I've done various Amtrak lines including
the Texas Eagle from Chicago to Dallas and the Pennsylvanian from
Philadelphia to Chicago. I also did various shorter hauls. The staff
were absolutely good and the passengers I talked to were all
interesting people with intersting stories to tell and not at all your
stereotype ignorant Americans. In fact the only stereotype Americans I
ever met were outside of America, so actually going to the place has
changed my views completely. I booked my trips on the internet and was
surprised what good value for money they were. This is by far the best
way to see the USA. I'm happy more and more Americans are also
awakening to the fact that their rail system is an underutilised asset.
Seconded
We did New York - Chicago - Vancouver - Ontario (then car to Niagara, then
fly to NY) over about 3 weeks, the people we met were perhaps the best bit,
closely follwed by the amazing scenery.
The worst we had, was the 5 hours late leaving on the first leg of the
journey from NY to Chicago - but we did make up two of those overnight!
We left home with only the coach tickets to Heathrow, everything else was
electronic ticketing or Amtrak 'print at the station' ticketing, everything
else worked splendidly (except one hotel booking in Canada, that was easily
sorted).
Do it again? Yes, yes, yes - but I'd do it the other way round (for the
Canadian leg)
