All,
Does anybody know if Cilcewydd Mill, which stands beside the railway
between Welshpool and Forden, was ever rail-connected? It looks as
though a spur might have come off the line and a siding might have
been situated next to the old Down line which is soon to be
reinstated, as there's evidence that a hoist operated on the building
on the railway side to lift goods in and out of the various levels of
the warehouse. We also know that a model has been built of the mill,
and that has a siding incorporated into it, but that might be artistic
licence.
While I'm at it, I recently found a GWR boundary post on my walks
around Welshpool, beside the railway line, but on the "legal" side of
the fence. It's dated 1881. What would that be doing there, as they
didn't take over until 1922? I decline to go into detail where I found
it to prevent anyone from turning up and stealing it.
Richard
Whether the boundary post is an anomaly might depend exactly where it
is. Don't forget that the line from Shrewsbury as far as Buttington
was GW/LNW Joint rather than Cambrian.
