Broadly competitive with a road journey on a route from one railway station

Surely a direct 'station to station' route should be the *one* route that
rail should always win.

What's the comparison for a journey from a location 15 minutes taxi ride
from
each terminal point? Say, the Conference Centre on Broad Street to the
GMEX...

And perhaps you should add on half the frequency of the train service to
give an average journey time from a random starting time.

And the car time should of course include the time taken to find the car
at the beginning of the journey, park it at the end, and walk from the
place where you have parked it.

Then there is the time taken to organise yourself a train ticket, vs.
the time taken to stop at a toilet, get petrol, scrape the
frost of the windscreen, etc. etc.

These car vs. train time things tend to be rather meaningless.

Indeed, for most people the choice of train/car mode is made on other
criteria - comfort, privacy, convenience, ability to work, ability to listen
to their own music, ability to sit around a table with travelling companions,
etc etc etc ad infinitum
