I see what you mean. It's like that Machynlleth sign - it's impossible
to say "egsosts" without it coming out in pseudo-welsh. Just as it's
impossible to say "Otley" without going stage Yorkshire, or
"Basingstoke" without a nasal whine creeping in ...
<g> And yet my wife has a wonderful way of pronouncing "Birmingham"
which sounds the "n" and the "h" while having a silent "g". She'd never
pass for a Brummie.
