The other major issue is current safety rules that require gateline
supervision. The central area stations often have some staff around
but not throughout operational hours. Quieter outlying stations have
CCTV coverage and no staff at all. There may be an interesting safety
case in order to justify the probable extent of gated operation at
unstaffed locations.

I found an earlier item (my other post) that suggests only 13 stations -
would that be roughly the 7 'underground' stations (assuming legislation
requires them to be manned anyway - even if usually 'invisible' like at
Manors), then there'd only be the 6 other busiest stations?

Wonder which six other stations they might choose?

The article lists them! Here are the 6 other stations :-

Airport, Heworth, North Shields, South Gosforth, South Shields, West
Jesmond. I'd say they broadly make sense but if people wish to get
round the gates between Newcastle and South Gosforth they can leap out
at Ilford Road. It's 5-10 minutes walk to either South Gosforth or West
Jesmond.

I'd count these as central area stations as they are all in the tunnel
section. Central, Gateshead, Haymarket, Jesmond, Manors, Monument, St
James.

IIRC these all retain their original gates but with the readers blanked
out and the turnstiles set to freewheel. They were retained to maintain
some semblance of passenger flow management relative to the escalators.
