All the signal boxes you list were in operation in 1960, and at least
until the early 70's. South was , I think, the first to close.
The Swift [1] diagrams for this line show Birkdale, then Aughton Road
(Crossing), Duke Street (Crossing; Crossing Keeper's Post from 4.6.53),
Portland Street (Crossing) and Southport South (Box Closed 4.12.66).
It's not clear if the intermediate boxes were block posts or just gate
boxes. However, the note for Duke Street states that this one was
downgraded from block post to gate box in 1953. This /might/ imply that
the others remained block posts until at least 1966. Or it might just mean
that the others (Aughton Road and Portland Street) were never block posts.

Old enough to remember St Luke's
I am 99.9% certain that they were block posts because crossing cabins were
not shown in the signal box opening hours. (The example I am thinking of is
Townsend Fold on the Bury to Bacup line)
AND, all of the boxes, Southport South excepted, were shown as having no
switching out switch. Ergo: they were block posts or what wasn't able to be
switched out?
