It wasn't just wagons that went missing - loco's did too.
With the "inbalance" of traffic flows control offices had a daily
balance of locomotives - with the result orders were given that "xxx"
number of loco's had to be sent from "a" to "b" etc. As a result
loco's (mainly freight) would get lost for weeks on end.
Similarily "manual" reporting wasn't too reliable - One I remember...
A Liverpool Street "Jazz" EMU was reported to be stabled at four
seperate locations one evening - but was in Wolverton works at the
time.
