Are the class 22x DEMUs narrower than other stock or is it just an
optical illusion because of their profile? One passed me today and it
looked rather slim from the front to say the least.
Tilt-profile might make them look a bit slimmer.

There was a photo (in an advert, I think) in MR of a 57 pulling a
Pendolino into Holyhead. The Pendo looked surprisingly bulky compared
to the 57, given that I was expecting the Pendo to be slimmer because of
the tilt.

Somewhere I have a photo of a Pendolino and Voyager side by side at
the buffers at Manchester Piccadilly - from memory the Voyager does
look a lot "slimmer" - but I wonder if its partly an optical illusion
due to the way they are painted etc.? As the Voyagers tilt less than
the Pendolinos one would expect them to be less "profiled" - but they
do look narrower I agree.
