Re: IEP - Self-powered = DMUs?

Mk.3 coaches that this group loves so much.

They were in HST form. In LH form. In EMU form (I'm talking 23 m 442s
here not the 20 m sliding door version). And at one poiht there was to
have been a EHST version with a single AC loco/power car at one end.
Sleeping cars. Catering cars. Flexibility for all applications over
all routes. Electric. Diesel. 25 kV overhead. 750 V DC third rail. 125
mph. 100 mph.

Why is then that some of you (a minority) can't see that IEP is
setting out to do the same - a multi application platform - the only
difference is combined electric+diesel operation - which is not rocket
science with the technology existing on SR way before Mk.3s.

So we can agree then that IEP is a 1970s idea.

What made sense in the 70s when Europe was predominantly a 100 -
125mph maximum railway doesn't necessarily add up nowadays.

The rest of Europe has moved on, it is an inconvenient and
increasingly expensive fact that the UK has not.

Many nowadays-standard aspects of European, Asian or even US rolling
stock design remain a pipe dream here in the UK.

Remember, how the IC225 was equipped with virtually off-the-shelf SIG
bogies that as I remember required only software reconfiguration, I
wonder how true that could be today.

How easily can modern traction equipment, bogies, braking systems,
signalling systems and pantographs be sourced in a Europe of
manufacturers supplying 200 mph railways on UIC loading gauge.

The most cost effective approach nowadays must be to evolve (devolve
more like) existing trains to our requirements not entirely new trains
to a requirement unique to the UK.

Like I said, who else is in the market for IEP?
