As transmission, including in the catenary, is alternating current the
electrons don't move very much anyway, just backwards and forwards over very
short distances. Electrons do have to travel on dc railways.

Even then they don't move very fast , its the current that "moves". To
use an analogy , the hydraulic fluid in a cars break system doesn't
require the fluid in the cylinder to physically move to the break
calipers before force is applied because there is continuous fluid
linking the 2. If its compressed at one end it'll cause a force at the
other end without the fluid itself moving very far. Same with
electrons.
