Rail station plan expects clear run
By Richrad Marsden
CORBY'S new railway station is expected to be approved by Corby
councillors tonight, meaning that work can start on the £3m project
early next year.
Sounds a pretty low price for a station these days, aren't they
talking about £8m for Imperial Wharf; but then I guess it'll be a
single platform, for what 4 or 5 car trains? IIRC Chandlers Ford came
in at about £2.5m - something like that would probably cope ok...
The location appears to be the old railway station, closed well over 40
years ago. It briefly re-opened for a shuttle DMU service to Kettering
before closing again.
The last time I looked at the area, it was a double track line and still had
the platform structure.
Unfortunately, whilst they are talking of carparking and public transport,
it has location issues. Its quite a way from the bulk of Corby housing
(being mostly west and south). Its quite near the industrial estates, but
those are not (typically) the sort of places with regular London travel
requirements. 138 car parking spaces is hardly a major station.
The alternative location could have been to the south, near the bulk of the
new housing. However, that suffers from being barely 4 miles from Kettering
station, so hardly worth the effort !
I expect the service will be units running to Kettering and then hopping up
the branch to Corby where they will start/terminate. Much better than
nothing, and nice to see a new service, but hardly a major change.
