Aren't there some 3+3 coaches in suburban service in Sweden (or
is it Denmark)?
Denmark. The København S-Tog is built with LHB (now Alstom) KERF axles
instead of bogies, and with short boxes, which allows a much wider car
within the same dynamic profile. In addition, the classic Scandinavian
loading gauges are considerably wider than UIC. (When the common loading
gauge was agreed upon in 1913, with Britain opting out, it was close to
the Italian profile AFAIK, the French had to widen the profile at many
places, countries like Germany or Switzerland already had a slightly
bigger profile, and the Scandinavian countries had built MUCH bigger
right from the beginning. While they joined the agreement, they have
kept their bigger profile nationally.)
Width of these trains is 3.52 m. On pictures,

you can easily see, that the trains are wider than allowed by the
platforms.
With this technology, you could probably build a train for the UK
network, which is about 3.1 m wide (certain lines in the South not
counted). For København, the situation was "tight restrictions by the
infrastructure", which would have been super-expensive to overcome, so
they used any technical trick for gaining more space inside the trains.
For seating, they use some kind of 2.5 + 2.5 concept. See yourself:
