Charlie...

As one of the operating team of that and many similar overnight
charter trains I can tell you that you weren't on your own.

In two successive years we had to deal with the same young male
who suffered epileptic fits after hanging out of the end door
windows of our BR Mk 1 coaches for miles and hours on end.

The first instance was while passing through Motherwell and the
Glasgow suburbs well after midnight to reach the West Highland
Line. All the yard, station and traction depot lights flashing by
set him off but we managed to calm him down. He was taken to
hospital at Fort William for the day and missed the run out to
Mallaig and back. (Surely now on topic for a Hogwarts thread?).

The next occasion was on the return leg of a Skye tour, en route
from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness. Once again he was hanging
out of the window and threw another fit as we descended from
the hills above Strathpeffer to Dingwall, due to the strobe-like
effects of the lineside telephone poles flashing rapidly by. This
time it was so bad we had to stop at Dingwall and summon a local
doctor. We were delayed for 30 minutes while he was treated
and then declared fit to continue on condition he was kept away
from the windows --- which he was!
