I have always used the term "train station" with native english
speakers, and up to now I have heard no protest, but who cares...
Simply one syllable less, so easier to pronounce.

British or American?

It's an American idiom not a British one.

Is it? True, my English is rather shaped by the US-american variant
of English. After having been taught English rather of the
Ocford-variant in school, in my adult life I was exposed much more to
US-american speakers and writers, having worked for US-american
companies and collaborating with political friends mostly from the
USA.

I'll try to adapt to my audience in order to avoid
misunderstandings.

L.W.
