The obvious solution is to put the Oyster touch-pads (or even a second
set of touch pads) at platform level by the stairs.
I guess the logic is that the bottom of the stairs signifies that the
street stops and the station begins at that point - there is in fact a
red line painted along the ground, something that has existed since
the start of the DLR to designate the boundary of the fare-paid area.

No ticked barriers on the DLR?

Curious,
L.W.

No, not at DLR only stations. DLR stations are unmanned (there are
ticket machines), and automatic ticket barriers require there to be at
least one member of staff supervising them. Tickets are checked on-
board the trains by the DLR "Passenger Service Agent" (who were
originally called by the much better title "Train Captain").

There are ticket barriers at Stratford, Canning Town and Bank - but
that's because they are interchange stations with the Underground, and
so the Underground station staff are responsible for these.

What might look like direct interchanges between the DLR and the
Underground at Canary Wharf, Shadwell, Bow Church and Tower Gateway
are in fact out-of-station interchanges - i.e. passengers must walk at
street level between the two separate stations.

Woolwich Arsenal station, a National Rail station, already has ticket
barriers overseen by railway staff, and DLR passengers will need to
pass through them when that extension opens in 2009.
