I'm pleased to hear it. Soon all those First Class carriages will be
running empty all day; everyone attending meetings will be staying the night in Ibis hotels in London after a nice meal at Wetherspoons, and travelling on Super-advance tickets.

Entirely anecdotally, from overheard conversations in First*, the public; academic; and 'not for profit' sectors are very well represented under the yellow stripes.

I admit that a feeling that might be the case was buzzing round
my head while I was writing that! Of course academics do tend
to hold rather louder concersations than anyone else...

Here's what The University of Mudchester has to say about the subject:

"Rail travel should normally be in standard class. Senior staff may
travel first class provided that there is a good business reason
for so doing and first class travel has been approved in
advance by their Head of School. (Heads of School
should seek approval from their Faculty Dean)."

Don't ask me what a good business reason would be, or exactly
how 'senior staff' is defined, or whom a Faculty Dean seeks
approval from. Suffice to say that I don't get to travel
first class.

Also:

"Please take advantage of special offers or discounts, e.g. Apex, Supersaver, on-line booking etc."

I wonder if staff aged over 60 could obtain a railcard on
expenses?
