What is the meaning of the white squashed hexagon on many (but not all)
signal posts?
Normally when the train is stopped at a signal for longer than a
specified time the rules say the driver has to telephone the signal
box as a reminder that he is there.
The diamond shows that there is a track circuit giving a visual
indication at the signal box, so he doesn't need to phone in.
