Re: Forth Bridge painting programme

Logic suggests so - if a cable snaps and the bridge doesn't fall down,
one would have thought that it would be an option to replace that cable.

The cables concerned are the main cables, which are made of
thousands of small cables. When one of these small cables snaps it
reduces the strength of the main cable slightly.

If dehumidification does not stop the breakages then, depending on
the position, the main cables can be replaced or augmented, all
outlined in the report I mentioned.

OTOH it's very likely that whilst feasible, that would be a very
expensive process, and a new bridge could be constructed for a fraction
of the cost of a complete replacement of the cables on a one-at-a-time
basis.

Claims that the existing bridge is falling down were used to lobby
for an additional bridge, which is falsely promoted as a
"replacement" bridge. However, this "replacement" bridge cannot be
built quickly enough to avoid the need for dehumidification,
possibly followed by replacement/augmentation on the existing
bridge. That is why the "Forth Replacement Crossing Study" makes no
mention of knocking the existing bridge down after the "replacement"
bridge is built, but rather devotes its attention to using the
existing bridge and its "replacement". The word "replacement" is
something the Ministry of Truth would be proud of.

In addition the bods in parliament have just voted to abolish tolls,
with the result that the general taxpayer will have to provide all
the money for these works.
