Indeed it is, Tony, and it goes much further into technical and
engineering detail than one might expect. However, lots of questions
spring to mind such as how is the new concrete to be formed on the
outside of the existing segments.
If you examine the drawing more closely, you will see that it
indicates that the new reinforced concreter will be cast in three
horizontal sections on each side of the pre-cast arches, with a shaped
cap poured over the top.
The elevation shows a vague
indication of additional material to restrain outward movement of the
foot of the new concrete, but how is that anchored?
The method of construction described above reduces the pressure at the
lower end of the shuttering, so shouldn't be a problem.
The use of foamed concrete above the structure will reduce the amount
of fill. AIUI, some of the fill that was removed after the collapse
is still stored locally. The original fill consisted of two different
materials, which had to be used separately in different parts of the
construction. At removal, these became largely mixed. The
requirement for a reduced volume of fill, which shouldn't have the
requirement for different types, may mean that this can be reused.
That should please the locals twofold: Less import of fill, and the
removal of the stored fill.
