Back in 1892 a significant section of the Cromford & High Peak Railway
from Whaley Bridge to Ladmanlow Goods was closed when the L&NW completed
its route from Stockport to Buxton. It was a long section of line to
close so early.

That line had a least one rope worked incline (now a road), possiblly
two, so closure was pretty inevitable - it was a turtuous route and
never really viable.

Three I think. There was the one at Whaley Bridge (1:13.5), one at Shallcross (1:10.25) and one at Burnsall (1:7) (the latter having been built as two inclines, but converted into one in 1857).

The Whaley incline was chain (rather than rope), a low bridge preventing locomotives from working it.

The Oakwood press do (or did) an interesting booklet on the line.
