Early closure/Late opening

Back in 1892 a significant section of the Cromford & High Peak Railway from Whaley Bridge to Ladmanlow Goods was closed when the L&NW completed its route from Stockport to Buxton. It was a long section of line to close so early.
In 1906 the Midland Railway opened their main line from New Mills South Junction to Heaton Mersey, another significant piece of railway which included a very long tunnel.
What other significant sections of railway closed very early on? I am not talking about short curves and the like, but quite long chunks of route.
What other significant sections of railway opened very late on, excluding the obvious G.C. route to London?
Brian.
