Hello,
I'm creating an online map showing the locations of yards that
scrapped BR steam locos.
I am after the following information, if anybody can help.
Addresses, grid references or whatever, for the following areas:-
The yards around the Rotherham / Sheffield areas (e.g. Beighton,
Beighton Junction, Killamarsh).
The locations of the Wigan / Ince scrapyards.
The yards around Risca, Bynea and Morriston, South Wales.
The location of Kings, Norwich.
California Sidings, Sharpness.
And any others not shown on my map!
I have the Steam For Scrap books, all four of them. These are good,
but they don't give too much emphasis on the actual physical location
of the yards in most cases.
I have been using flashearth.com - in Microsoft VE mode, this is
pretty good, and gives lon/lat details too.
The map (so far) is here:-
http://local.live.com/Default.aspx?where1=1&wa=wsignin1.0
Thanks for your help.
Very Best Wishes,
Bob.
Bynea scrapyard was at the former Bynea Steelworks, between Bynea station
and the Llwchwr. Landranger 159, N990 E511-the site is now a plant making
wiring harnesses, I believe.
Cohen's Morriston was on the now-closed Midland line from Swansea towards
Pontardawe. Same map, N965 E676, approximately- the site now appears to
be
under a lake (which wasn't there when I worked at the adjacent BSC
Landore
Foundry)
Sorry if the map references don't conform to the norm- it's about 35
years
since I did them in geography...
Some of the Bulleid tender underframes from Bynea ended their days as
ingot
carriers at Duports, Llanelli. The Morriston scrapyard also dealt with
the
Blue Pullmans- I've still got a notice from one of them.
Brian
Hello Brian,
I've tried to input those references into the Ordnance Survey Get-A-
Map page, and they're not accepted :-(.
Thankyou for the info anyway :-)
Could you have a look at my map, at:-
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=53.716361~-1.976174&style=r&lvl=6&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&&cid=34B19A98B1C461DB!110&encType=1
And maybe point me in the right direction from there?
Very Best Wishes,
Bob.
I wonder whether instead of N990 E511 for Bynea, Brian may have intended to
say N990 E551 ?

In Morriston, where he refers to N965 E676 he presumably means
