As mentioned in a previous post by naked_draughtsman, just what is the
metal inside the windows of these trains? Why trains are effected and
can anyone offer a clue as to why the windows contain this element?
I know space vehicle windows contain Alexadrite to help block out
radiation but what is the effect on a virgin train, besides blocking
mobile phone signals?
There are several possibilities. The coating is put on using a gaseous
compound which decomposes to provide the metallic coating. AlCl3 and
SnCl4 are the most likely precursors, to leave tin or aluminium as the
coating. The coating is intended to reflect radiated heat and is
likely to be in the cavity between glass layers.
There have also been coatings put on in the tin bath, which include
Indium, using an electrolytic process. There were lots of patents on
this subject back in the 1960s. Coating via the gas phase came in
during the 1980s and 1990s.
