The competition is there but when one side ignores the other, what is
the point? Should a state rail company receiving a subsidy be forced

are the ethics of a state backed company going into head to head
competition with a private operator? If the answer is "no, they
shouldnt go into competition with Megabus" then why should they
continue to receive subsidy to maintain their services? Rural
routes? Well, Citylink manages to maintain it's rural routes quite
well and still make profit on intercity.
Some would claim Scotland is subsidised full stop.
I'll think you'll find one way or another that road users are being
subsidised on many Scotish roads why else do we never hear of profits?
Buses and HGVs are subsidised most of all, if not by the taxpayer (who
knows) then certainly by other road users i.e. car owners.
One of the arguments for giving access to the railway at Dornoch
bridge was that it was unfair to throw money at the A9 whilst denying
investment to the Far North line.
Scotland does have one fully commercial road though, that meets its
costs, that bridge to Skye and just look how much the toll costs and
don't we all get to know about it.
I bet there's no £1 fare Megabus going that way.
But the executive removed the toll a couple of years ago
