Practice dividing by 4 though, as everything is defined in terms of
carriages, not unit trains.

Very interesting. The easy-to-comprehend bits are:
* Four 319s to FCC by Dec 2007, the remaining eight to go by Dec 2008.
* Twelve 377s to be built for use by Southern, presumably arriving by
Dec 2008 - is the electrostar production line primed and ready for
action?
All very logical and sensible decisions so far...

Despite integration of GatEx and Southern, a premium service with
luggage capacity is to be retained for Gatwick pax. Six trains to be
extended from/to Brighton in each peak. These trains will comprise a
minimum of ten carriages, the length of which is unspecified. Ah, a
role for some of the WES fleet, with the snug area reverting to a
cage? In that case ten carriages is the MAXIMUM permitted. If 442s
call at intermediate stations south of Gatwick, I reckon a ballpark
figure of 2 mins delay per stop based on extended dwell times and
sluggish acceleration. The former could be mitigated with pick up/set
down only as appropriate. Omitting East Croydon should please the
Brighton Line Commuters Group - less crowding in the up direction and
more chance of a seat at Vic!

If there's a need for >10 carriages and more luggage space, that would
imply internal changes to a sub-fleet of 377s (a la VEG) or lengthened
junipers. I think the latter can be ruled out, as the fleet is
stretched as it is and looks set to continue providing a dedicated
airport service off-peak. A small fleet of WES units with a cage and
luggage stacks for a few peak services does appear to be a sensible
use of resources.

By the way, what future for SL when GatEx is wound up? Does SU have
capacity to take on its workload, with or without Wessies?

Looks like good news all round (except for National Express I
suppose), let's hope for implementation by December 2008...
