Why is it that Class 47s are so unpopular?
In one sentence, please!
Can't do it in one sentence!
OK, in no more than 10 pages of A4 please!
Seriously, I know the Class 47 has never been particularly popular.
Was it because there were so many built? Was it almost the Class 66
of its day, so ubiquitous as to be almost totally unremarkable?
I have always admired the 47's appearance, which was beautifully
detailed with the help of the BR Design Panel, but have never been
inspired by it. The Class 50, for all its mechanical, electricl and
(especially) electronic flaws, was a far more handsome beast in my
opinion.
But is it just about appearance? Or something more? Do tell..
I think most people who liked the more exotic motive power available in the
1970s/80s would frequently be disappointed when a 'bloody duff' came round
the corner instead. There you are I did it in one sentence! Like your
comments re class 50s though!
