he informed me that at the induction course he was informed that if he was
caught taking any pictures he would be evicted from the site. That will
probably be the reason for a lack of pictures from the site.
There are a number of pictures in the current Rail I flicked through in the
local WH Smiths lending library, I suggest waiting till your next preferred
rail mag appars - they'll all probably have the same shots...

As someone who has taken pictures at a number of accidents -
Rickerscote, Selby, Hatfield, Ladbroke Grove, Potters Bar, Ufton - you
have to respect that the area and its surroundings is initially
treated as a scene of crime, and the primary role of the police is to
preserve any evidence. So it doesnt help to have half the press pack
tramping through areas to be searched.
At Hatfield, access was prohibitively difficult, and I even resorted
to working my way into a rabbit warren estate and onto a footpath to
be turned back. Behind the police, I could see one of the bogies.
Later, around 1630, the police allowed a small contingent of bona fide
press (press cards were checked) onto the track some 50-70 yards from
the Class 91 so we could look south.
At Potter Bar, access on day 1 was very restricted, and I saw one
photographer using a 500mm lens with a 1.4x and 2x converter on to get
closer to the tent over the faulty points.
In the case of Ufton, the road was sealed off for around a mile, and
the press had to sign in with Thames Valley plod, and a handful were
taken by minibus to the location on the Sunday on the understanding
all images were shared with those who were not selected. Later in the
week access was more forthcoming.
In the case of this accident, one journalist donned a Network rail HVV
and hard hat, walked unchallenged to the site and freely took images.
OK, big fault by BTP and Thames Valley for not checking credentials,
and this may be why staff working to restore the line were under
strict instructions. Occasionally the scene is subject to air
exclusion too.
There is also a need for respect to any deceased and injured. We live
in an age of instant news, beamed by satellite around the world, and
no self-respecting news organisation will be doing serious close ups
for fear of offending relatives. In addition, you start publishing too
many close ups and it will be a clamp down for everyone. In the
Pendolino accident, the damage to photograph was not that
significant.
I have access to several major picture agencies as I sell my images,
and in the aftermath of the Madrid bombs, in one image you could make
out a corpse in the wreckage. This detail of this was not spotted by
the picture desk and it appeared on the front of The Times, I recall.
After the 7/7 bombs, one of the images of the train at Aldgate was
suddenly withdrawn from circulation and the press asked not to use it,
if they'd already downloaded it. So there is another reason why
clinical close-ups are not permitted.
Everyone has a job to do and the various agencies, inc press, work
together within certain parameters, and there is always some
negotiation to get closer. This was also RAIBs first big test so it
was important they called the shots as to which areas were sterile and
for how long.
Most of the pictures used by railway press came from one or two
agencies, primarily as railway photographers and magazine staff do not
have 400/500/600mm lenses. They're seldom used and too expensive !!!!!
