The problem is that the info is sketchy at the moment. For example, Rail
Europe's website has no information about passes after 31 March.
There seems to be an opportunity for a decent, usable, up to date official website detailing comprehensively with all these things.
You mean like an official website detailing every available flight say ex-UK with live fares availability? Sorry, it ain't gonna happen.
So it will remain for each operator to put out what it wants on it's own site and independent agencies using the web primarily to draw in business.
Validity on "other" railways is always a problem. Last time I went to Switzerland, whichever agent sold me the pass seemed genuinely not to know that there are real, non-tourist, railways other than SBB which may or may not accept passes. Fortunately I knew enough to know that they didn't know what they were saying. Germany and the Netherlands throw up similar problems.
Agree. A good case is clear easy-to-find information about German "Länder Tickets" I've seen several posts over the years asking for where to find the basics like maps. I'll always remember one reply came back on the grounds that one is supposed to know the boundaries of German regions because probably that you got taught that in school or something.
I don't suppose the railways will ever do it - maybe they could just pay the Man in Seat 61 who seems to be doing their job for them (and got at least two plugs in the Independent yesterday)!
He does make a small amount of money through various trade doubler type links on his site. He's also teamed up with International Rail in Ropley, Hants for ticket sales presumably on a commission sharing basis. But yes, he does put an extremely huge amount of effort in what is undoubtedly the easiest way to gather the basics you need for ex-UK international rail travel.
