Germany has - or certainly had when I worked there - compulsory private
medical insurance. This doesn't get counted as a tax burden in the
aforementioned calculations, but amounts to a very significant bite out
of the pay packet at the end of the month. The general impression (from
talking to colleagues) was that medical provision in .de was much
more lavishly resourced than in .uk, cost a /lot/ more and was almost
certainly less efficient (consider the spas which are underwritten by
health insurance in Germany).

But the money it costs you isn't counted as "tax" :)

Incidently, when you refer to the NHS now you need to specify /where/.
The was the NHS functions is very different in Scotland, or Wales,
or Northern Irelend from the odd system the English seem to have
landed themselves with.
