As Rian points out, it's that wretched Tab key that's to blame.
This time I'm going to set it all out first in good old Notepad:

And you could get one without any hassle at all if you put the times
first, and then the stations at the end of the line. It wouldn't matter
then whether you used tabs, fixed-width font, or whatever, so long as
you used the same on each row of text.

As a matter of fact, it *does* matter. If you don't use a fixed-width
font, the characters still won't have the same width and if you then use
tabs, you still have the risk of aligning the columns incorrectly.

Yes, you're right in some cases. But this is a newsgroup where HTML
postings are deplored, with the result that if people use a variable
width font, then most newsreaders that will display that with the
standard proportional font, which is going to be Times New Roman in
Windows, and probably something comparable on other platforms. The
numerals are all the same width in TNR, so no problem. It would only be
an issue if someone decided to use a font other than the default[1]. If
someone is bright enough to do that, then they're bright enough to
figure out for themselves why the columns aren't lining up. ;-)

[1] (Admittedly, it's likely that if someone did do that, they might
choose Georgia, which would give rise to the problem.)
