Is it still necessary for many fares to be worked out by several
summations eg. on the basis of fare from minor town a) to major town b)
plus major town b) to major town c) plus major town c to minor town d)?
............

Unless I'm missing something with your orginal question , most fares these
days are worked out from the nearest major stations at both ends of the
journey unless a specific fare is available for the minor towns in question
... For example a journey from Norwich to Felixtowe uses the same fares as
Norwich to Ipswich does (the fares from Ipswich are used as there are not
specific ones to Felixtowe) ...Obviously there is a specific Felixtowe to
Ipswich fare if that was the entirity of your journey , but in effect here
the Ipswich to Felixtowe part of the journey when travelling from most non
local places would cost you no more than the ticket just as far as Ipswich .
I hope that makes some resemblence of sense !
