Yet strangely an 08:50 arrival in London costs the same as a 05:50
arrival in London. TOCs are reluctant to offer discounted fares either.
I'd like to see walk-on fares that are valid on only a certain subset of
trains. Rather than creeping restrictions on Savers, you could have a
CheapoBargainValueOwl walk-on fare that was valid on listed trains
between 9pm and 4am only. You could pick any train that displayed the
relevant code letter in the timetable or was shown by the journey planner.
If your meeting finishes at 7pm, you know you have to hang around until you
can catch the first train at 9pm. This is much more like travel in car,
where you stay at home/work for a bit longer to miss the rush hour but know
you can still get home if you're a little bit later than expected.
You could of course combine a CheapoBargainValueOwl single on the outward
with a EconomySaverSkinflintEarlyBird (valid 3am-6am only) on the return, or
excess your EarlyBird to a PremiumDeluxeExecutiveLuxuryValuedCustomer single
if you were late and had to return in the morning peak.
