Upon the miasma of midnight, a darkling spirit identified as Brian
Begg-Robertson <brianbeggrobertson@xxxxxxxxxxxx> gently breathed:
I quite agree. I find top posting much easier to read and, as with this
message, I actually prefer to delete all the quoted text.
Which means that lots of people won't have a clue what you're on about.
Usenet isn't like email, you can't be sure that everyone gets all the
messages in the same order. It's quite common to see replies before
original posts, and if no context is given the result can be completely
baffling.
I came here to talk to fellow railway enthusiasts, not to bully people who
are les knowedgeable about cyber protocol than myself.
No-one is attempting to bully anyone, but if you join an established
forum you should expect to follow the conventions of that forum if you
want to get on with people.
After all, if you go for a train ride you have to follow the established
conventions of buying a ticket, finding the right platform, letting the
alighting passengers off before you get on, etc. Top-posting, or
posting without context, is a bit like being one of those people who
tries to force their way on while others are still getting off - very
anti-social, and just makes things unpleasant for everyone.
To be honest, neither top nor bottom are ideal, the best way (especially
in a technical discussion, such as the very interesting ones on
signalling that sometimes come up), is to "interlace" your reply,
answering paragraph by paragraph, as I've done here. The result reads
more like a conversation that way and is much easier for everyone to
follow, including people who've come in half-way and may not have seen
(or have access to) the full thread.
