fares query: Woking to Bath

I'm going to have to make this trip next week and there are two obvious
routes, via Reading or Salisbury (via London just doesn't seem to cut
it).
Using Wednesday as an example, National Rail gives me two Supersaver
fares: 32.00 and 50.00.
On the outbound the first is the available on all via Reading journeys and
the second via Salisbury.
But on the return the first is available on 2 of the 4 via Reading trips: at
17&18:42 and on a via Southampton journey. But neither are available
on the other two via Reading at 17&18:12.
The latter make connections at Guildford whilst the others make
connection at Basingstoke or Farnborough (No thanks!).
Also the 18:12 is available to a saver ticket, but the 17:12 isn't.
How do I find out what the actual restrictions for these tickets
are? Is it time based, route based or operator based. It really
isn't clear at all. Ideally I'd like to go by whichever route gives
me the best safety margin, not by the quickest with a silly 5 minute
connection into one train every hour
TIA
tim
