Re: Peer fights for longer daytimes

I have difficulty in seeing why a one hour time difference has any effect on
our interaction with Europe. Australia has three time zones, one of which
requires adjusting the minutes as well as the hours, and two of these zones
are further subdivided into those which observe Daylight Saving and those
which don't. I am not aware that Australia has any problems with its
internal commerce, any more than the USA has with its four time zones.

It gets worse. Tasmania changes its times at a different time to other
states, and my computer automatically adjusted its clock one week early
(I think this may have something to do with the Commonwealth Games
delaying the end of DST.

SA and NT are half an hour out of phase with most of the rest of the
world because many years ago there were calls to switch to EST. The
politicians decided that adjusting a full hour would be too much, so
they moved it only half an hour!!! Since then Daylight saving was
introduced, so we're currently an hour and a half off our natural time
here. Not surprisingly, there are frequent calls to get rid of this
stupid half hour difference. Unfortunately we keep it because people
can't agree on the way to get rid of it - some want to revert to our
natural time, others want to synchronize with Sydney and Melbourne.
Personally I think we should syncronize with Queensland (only half an
hour different, and we'd never have to reset all our clocks again...

....Except that in SE Queensland some people want to introduce Daylight
Saving Time (though the rest of that state's staunchly against it).
There's also a proposal to introduce Daylight Saving in WA for
environmental reasons (WA gets mush of its electricity from coal).

As so much of Britain's electricity is from nuclear sources, that
doesn't seem to be a good reason to switch timezones in Britain. It
shouldn't be a good reason in Australia either, as we have abundant
renewable energy.
