Before subsidy those phones are £299+, and they have tiny screens.
And what did you get 5 years ago for your £299?
MP3 players used to be "huge" at 5GB - now they are 60GB plus - for
the same price, or less.
£250 upwards. My MP3 player was £24 over a year ago.
I'm guessing your £24 player was not a cutting edge MP3 player though -
what you could look at is what a player of the capacity and features
yours has cost when it WAS cutting edge - bet it was a lot more than
£24.
I bought a 64mb sony Player in 2000 - it cost an absolute bomb - now
you can get more capacity for £25 :-)
Prices for things fall, but there are other forces at work. A "good
mobile phone" has cost £299 for the last ten years.
I won't hold my breath, but an 8" screen video player with 50GB for
about £50 would make a good Xmas present.
POrtable DVD players are starting to get near that mark (originally
coming in at £200+)
I'll be impressed when they can make them (rather than dump them) at
that sort of price.

Moores law on IT kit says what you get for your money doubles every 18
months. There are moves afoot to write on the retina with a scanning laser
(sometime in the next ten years at present rate of progress), so full cinema
experience would be feasable, assuming you can find something worth watching
(the poor quality of current window technology, dim dirty and not lined up
with the seat, may help encourage people to try them).
All of this is because they no longer give you enough room to read a
magazine!
I used a laptop to and from work every day on the First Gen dmus, the 142s
made that very difficult if not impossible but the more recent DMUs are not
too bad (at least if you can get a table seat.
Non of the current generation MUs seem as comfy as the third class on the
old Altrincham to Manchester 1930s DC sets, not even close, pop riveted
plastic and thin foam rubber, its as bad as the average modern motor car.
