Can anybody identify this 4-digit station code on a train ticket -

I think it's Manchester Piccadilly - can anybody confirm?
Have a look at Phil Deaves' "Railway Codes" page:
<http://deaves47.users.btopenworld.com/rail_index.htm>. Or indeed,
download my own list (in Excel format) at
<http://www.joyce.whitchurch.btinternet.co.uk/NL_codes.xls>.
Though as it happens, none of those can help. Manchester Piccadilly is
actually 2968. I have a feeling that 8939 is either a very new code or
else something obscure like a travel agent's code.
Then again... are you sure you're reading the station code and not the
machine code? If you go to
<http://www.joyce.whitchurch.btinternet.co.uk/tickets/aptis2.jpg>,
you'll see a scan of an early APTIS ticket, highlighting the different
codes and so on. There are four sets of numbers after the date. The
first is the number of that individual ticket (5 digits). The second (4
digits) is the number of the issuing machine. The third (4 digits again)
is the National Location Code of the station. The fourth (2 digits, 1
letter) is the "window number", which identifies the specific ticket
window at the station (you'll see that more clearly at
<http://www.joyce.whitchurch.btinternet.co.uk/tickets/aptis1.jpg>).
